10 Acres in Camp Strake Eyed for Montgomery County’s First Medical School

Located in Huntville, Sam Houston State University is in preliminary discussions of the development of a medical school on the former Camp Strake property in Montgomery County north of Houston. It would result in about 10 acres to be donated to SHSU by Houston based Johnson Development who acquired the former 2000-acre Boy Scout camp, Camp Strake last year. Dependent on funding and regulatory approvals being met, SHSU would construct the first medical school in Montgomery County. Completion of deal is a long way out and SHSU does not currently own the land as Johnson Development has not donated the property. They are in the very very early states of planning as per University spokewoman Julia May. Johnson Development acquired Camp Strake with plans to develop and transform it into a master planned community with hundreds of single-family homes and commercial development.
